Reduce Stress, Increase Mood.
Did you know that having (and therefor living in) a clean home can help to reduce stress & anxiety while also boosting your mood? Makes perfect sense, really. Think about the last time the kids trashed the joint, last nights spaghetti sauce was still spattered on the backsplash, and the floors looked like a herd of cattle came straight from the mud-hole and stampeded through the house. In the back of your mind you also know that you still have a busy week ahead and it will only likely get worse before it gets better since you can’t get to it right away. We all know what THAT feeling is like, so it only makes sense that when our home looks the opposite of that, we would also have opposite feelings and emotions.
Clutter & mess can overwhelm our senses and make it harder to focus. This can lead to feelings of chaos, while having a tidy and clean space can create a sense of order & calm. A clean environment can reduce distractions (like the spaghetti sauce on the backsplash) and enable you to concentrate better and be more productive with other aspects of your life. Even sleep can be impacted, with studies showing that people sleep better in clean, uncluttered bedrooms.
If the mess is draining you, try a few of these simple steps to see if things improve:
Daily Habits:
Make your bed every morning - Instant visual improvement.
Tidy for 5 minutes before bed or after dinner (put things back where they belong).
Clean up as you go - Wipe counters after cooking, rinse dishes right away.
One Load of Laundry per day (if needed) - Avoids pileups.
The One Minute Rule:
If a task takes less than one minute, do it right away.
Toss junk mail
Wipe the bathroom mirror
Return shoes to the rack
Throw dirty laundry in the hamper
Push your chairs back in
Hang up your coat
